A Guide to Incorporating Running and Fitness into Family Activities
Almost everyone knows that exercising is good for our bodies. Working out regularly increases bone and muscle density, strengthens the heart, prevents illness, and much more. However, family fitness is about more than physical health.[1] Engaging in exercise as a family can strengthen bonds, instill healthy habits, and reduce stress, all while having lots of fun—benefits that your children will carry throughout their lifetime to improve their health and lifestyle.
While these benefits are worth the effort, it can sometimes be a challenge getting everyone to participate in family fitness time. This reigns especially true when we speak about running as a family. However, by adding some sort of fun twist to a basic run, you can motivate even the most resistant family members. Let’s check out a few ideas:

Compete in Family Fun Runs or Races
Family fun runs can be a great way to motivate competitive family members. While these runs first and foremost, are designed to be fun, a competitive individual may be enticed to put in the effort to train to win. By gently training for and completing these races, families can build consistent habits in their running journey. Furthermore, some community runs raise money for charities, a two-birds, one-stone opportunity. Not only will you exercise as a family, but you will also be supporting the community.

Pick a Scenic Running Location
Running is a challenge, especially for beginners. By choosing a scenic trail to run on you can provide more positive stimuli, creating a more enjoyable run. Parents can use this opportunity to teach young kids to observe the natural environment and the names of specific plants they come across while on their run. This experience can foster a great sense of appreciation and interest in nature.
Design Fitness Obstacle Courses
Fitness obstacle courses in a nearby park or a large backyard can add an element of excitement to family runs. Parents can use hula hoops, pool noodles, ropes, cones, ladders, and more, to design age-appropriate fitness courses. Children can even get a bit creative and help with the course layout as well! These courses can get the whole family excited to race each other as they run and jump to the finish line.
Set Up a Scavenger Hunt Run
For an exciting family run, consider setting up a scavenger hunt along your running trail. Make a list of items or landmarks that the family must spot during their run. An activity like this adds to the overall experience of a run. It also encourages young children to use their observation and exploration skills, enhancing spatial awareness.

Final Thoughts
By spicing up your running routine, you can motivate and excite your family to join you on your runs. Regular running can increase mood, strengthen muscles and bones, build healthy habits, and become a cherished family activity. Remember to start slow, especially with little ones and their little legs. As you and your family members become better runners, you gradually can increase pace and route lengths.
Happy running!
